‘Is Biden Going To Come After Trump Like A Spider Monkey?’ CNN’s Jim Acosta Mocks ‘Jacked-Up’ Debate Spin

CNN anchor Jim Acosta vividly mocked the “jacked up” commentary around President Joe Biden’s debate with former President Donald Trump, asking “Is Biden going to come after Donald Trump like a spider monkey?”

Trump and his allies have been mounting an attack designed to explain away Biden’s strong performance if he beats Trump at next week’s debate — baselessly claiming he must be doing drugs. At a speech last week, Trump got specific and accused Biden of doing cocaine. Trump allies have downgraded the president from cokehead to Mountain Dew chugger.

On Wednesday’s edition of CNN Newsroom With Jim Acosta, Acosta used the latter attack to riff with panelists Meghan Hays and David Urban on the film Talladega Nights:

JIM ACOSTA: This is what one Republican congressman was saying over the weekend, on these performance enhancing substance allegations that Trump World is making. Let’s listen to this one.

REP. ERIC BURLISON: Trump’s team should not underestimate Joe Biden and his team’s ability to you know, whether they’re going to, jack him up on Mountain Dew or whatever it is — that look, the State of the Union this year, he had a lot of energy for about an hour, an hour or an hour and a half.

JIM ACOSTA: Now, that jacked up on Mountain Dew reference.

DAVID URBAN: Does he drink Mountain Dew? I’m not sure —

JIM ACOSTA: Right out of Talladega Nights. I think that was of, Ricky Bobby’s two kids. That was Texas Ranger. He said he was all jacked up on Mountain Dew.

Is he going to come after Joe Biden, or is Joe Biden going to come after Donald Trump like a spider monkey?

What’s going on here?

DAVID URBAN: Listen, I think they’d love it if he came after him like a spider monkey, right? The Biden camp needs to see an energetic Joe Biden. They want to see a youthful, aggressive Joe Biden.

And you heard Kristen Holmes talk about this. You know, the Trump campaign wants to see a more subdued Donald Trump, Donald Trump in the second debate in 2020.

If he shows up on Thursday night, it’s going to cause very big problems for Joe Biden because he was constrained, he stuck to the topics, he was policy focused, and he won a debate. Nobody remembers it because they didn’t watch, because he did so poorly in the first debate.

The second debate, he did very well. If that guy shows up, W for the Trump camp.

JIM ACOSTA: Yeah, but but, David, I mean how silly is this getting when we’re talking about jacked up on Mountain Dew? I mean, come on, this is just this doesn’t even pass the laugh test! He’s quoting Ricky Bobby!

DAVID URBAN: Well, listen, so so.

JIM ACOSTA: If you’re not first you’re last, I guess, is where we’re at right now?

DAVID URBAN: Maybe. Maybe Biden’s drive around with a cougar in his car. We don’t know.
