Jimmy Kimmel Asks Obama And Biden About Claim Trump Did The Most For Black People — Drops Mocking Nickname On Trump
Late night host Jimmy Kimmel asked President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama about ex-President Donald Trump’s claim to have done the most for Black people as president — and dropped a mocking nickname.
The president raised over $28 million this weekend with a star-studded Saturday fundraiser headlined by Obama, Hollywood superstars like George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and a “moderated conversation” with Biden and Obama hosted by Kimmel.
In one exchange from the live program streamed to supporters, Kimmel brought up Trump’s frequent claim to have done as much or more for Black people than the late former President Abraham Lincoln.
Kimmel got a laugh when, as he asked the question, he deployed a derisive nickname sending up Trump-friendly anti-Semitism-spouting rapper Kanye West:
JIMMY KIMMEL: Just up back to the truth and people saying things that just are brazenly false. President Obama, what goes through your mind —
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Yeah.
JIMMY KIMMEL: — when that President Don-ye West says that — (laughter) — he’s done more for Black people than any president since Abraham Lincoln? Do you agree?
PRESIDENT OBAMA: You know, it — it doesn’t actually go through my mind. I sort of leave it aside. Although, one thing he did, for example, for Black people was make them feel even better about the first Black president. Because they said —
PRESIDENT BIDEN: Hey. That’s a fact!
JIMMY KIMMEL: You know, the reason that — listen, we’re here tonight. We love you both. And we’re very grateful for everything you’ve done for this country and for all of us.
Kimmel was calling back to an earlier exchange about conspiracy theories and lies:
JIMMY KIMMEL: There are so many crazy things. Why do you think — why does it seem like so many people are embracing conspiracy theories over facts? Like, 20 years ago, if you said JFK was coming back from the dead to reclaim the White House, they’d lock you in an asylum. Now you get a podcast network out of it. (Laughter) Why is this happening?
PRESIDENT BIDEN: Well, look, there are no editors anymore. One of the things — I’m not blaming the press. The press is being victimized as well —
You have a circumstance where — think about it, where do you get — you have a significantly fewer number of people reading the mainstream press. Most people get their news from some site on the Internet. So much of it on the Internet is absolutely a flat-out lie. And it’s hard for people to get what the facts are. It’s hard for people to discern.
There’s nobody — and — and there’s no editors at all saying, “You can’t say that. That’s not true.” There used to be a lot more of that that existed. So, it’s just much easier to just flat-out lie.
