Shortly after President Donald Trump threatened to impose a variety of sanctions against Colombia for rejecting U.S. deportation flights, Colombia’s president promptly reversed course — offering to send his own personal plane to pick up the deportees.

In a statement (via CNN) issued less than an hour after Trump announced the sanctions, the Colombian government said President Gustavo Petro would offer his own plane to transport the migrants.

“The Government of Colombia, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has arranged the presidential plane to facilitate the dignified return of the compatriots who were going to arrive in the country today in the morning, coming from deportation flights,” the statement read. “This measure responds to the Government’s commitment to guarantee decent conditions.”

Trump, in a statement posted to Truth Social moments earlier, threatened to impose immediate 25 percent tariffs on Colombia, as well as a travel ban and other “decisive retaliatory measures.

“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia,” Trump wrote. “This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people. Petro’s denial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States.”

Earlier in the day, Petro said, “I cannot make migrants stay in a country that does not want them, but if that country sends them back, it should be with dignity and respect for them and for our country…A migrant is not a criminal.”
