Two people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a Kentucky church after shooting a state trooper at the local airport — leaving multiple people injured and the suspect dead.

According to Kentucky State Police (KSP), the trooper was shot at 11:36 a.m. Sunday at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, KY. The gunman then fled to the Richmond Road Baptist Church — which is on the opposite side of town from the airport more than 15 miles away — where two people were shot and killed.

“The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, at which time KSP and Lexington Police Dept. … were able to secure the suspect,” said the Kentucky State Police in a statement posted to X. At this time, we can confirm that the trooper is receiving medical attention. There are multiple victims at the church, and EMS is on scene. The suspect is deceased.”

Governor Andy Beshear (D-KY) added, “Kentucky, we are aware of a series of incidents in Lexington around one suspect, including a trooper-involved shooting and an additional shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church with multiple injuries. The trooper and others are being treated at a nearby hospital.”
