JUST IN: Kash Patel Confirmed As FBI Director — As Two Republican Senators Break Ranks
President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the FBI Kash Patel was confirmed on Thursday in a 51-49 Senate vote.
Sens. Lisa Murkowski (D-AK) and Susan Collins (D-ME) broke with their party and voted against Patel.
Collins noted the resignation of federal prosecutors in protest of the current administration in a statement vowing to oppose Patel ahead of the key vote.
“The nomination of Kash Patel to serve as Director of the FBI comes to the Senate against the backdrop of recent personnel actions at the Department of Justice, including the resignations of several career federal prosecutors who felt they were being instructed to act in a manner inconsistent with their ethical obligations,” the senator wrote.
Murkowski said Patel’s “prior political activities” prevented him from being qualified to lead the FBI. She red flagged the now-FBI leader not pushing back on the administration’s “decision to force the FBI to provide a list of agents involved in the January 6 investigations and prosecutions.”
Patel was pressed during his confirmation hearing on past statements regarding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and previously helping raise money for the families of jailed rioters.
“I have been disappointed that when he had the opportunity to push back on the administration’s decision to force the FBI to provide a list of agents involved in the January 6 investigations and prosecutions, he failed to do so,” Murkowski wrote.
