MAGA loyalist Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) broke ranks with President Donald Trump to unite with the state’s lawmakers in protesting the decision to strip Colorado Springs of the U.S. Space Command headquarters.
In a joint statement signed by every member of Colorado’s congressional delegation, Republicans and Democrats alike condemned the president’s move, announced Tuesday, to relocate the command to Huntsville, Alabama.
“Today’s decision to move U.S. Space Command’s headquarters out of Colorado and to Alabama will directly harm our state and the nation. We are united in fighting to reverse this decision,” the lawmakers declared. “Bottom line — moving Space Command headquarters weakens our national security at the worst possible time.”
“Moving Space Command sets our space defense apparatus back years, wastes billions of taxpayer dollars, and hands the advantage to the converging threats of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea,” the statement warned, adding that the disruption to civilian workers would “take our national defense systems decades to recreate.”
“Colorado Springs is the appropriate home for U.S. Space Command,” the lawmakers concluded. “We will take the necessary action to keep it there.”
Included among the lawmakers who signed the letter was Boebert, one of Trump’s fiercest allies on Capitol Hill, in a move that underscores the scale of local anger.
Trump first attempted to move the headquarters to Alabama in his previous term, but the plan was reversed by former President Joe Biden in 2023 after military officials cautioned it would harm readiness.
