Marc Maron has taken aim at fellow comedians and podcasters Who invite “white supremacists and fascists” onto their platforms by accusing them of becoming the “public face” of an emerging “fascist political movement.”
The comedy legend and host of WTF With Marc Maron posted a blog on his website on Monday where he warned that normalizing extreme right-wing ideology in entertainment spaces “suffocates” democracy.
Maron described a growing “American fascist movement rooted half in grievance and half in Jesus,” fueled by “tech oligarchs” and constant streams of propaganda. Maron believes this ideology is “pouring into the minds of all of us,” adding, “It is shameless and proud.”
Most pointedly, though, the comedian directly criticized his peers for giving these voices a platform, suggesting they bear responsibility for advancing this rhetoric.
“The anti-woke flank of the new fascism is being driven almost exclusively by comics, my peers,” he wrote, dismissing the notion that motivations—whether for free speech or notoriety—matter. “They are part of the public face of a fascist political movement that seeks to destroy the democratic idea.”
Maron warned that inviting extremists onto popular podcasts only serves to “humanize and normalize fascism,” claiming it is “facilitating anti-American sentiment and promoting violent autocracy.”
While he refrained from naming specific comedians or the “fascist” personalities he was talking about, his words came as major comic podcasters were the central subject of political discourse.
One day prior, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s appearance at a Trump rally, where the comedian made remarks about Puerto Rico, later condemned by the campaign, and just days after former President Donald Trump’s interview with podcasting comedian Joe Rogan – a show Maron himself has appeared on.
Maron wrote: “Fascism is good for business if you toe the line. Popular podcasts became tribal and divisive years ago. Now they may be in the position to become part of the media oligarchy under the new anti-democratic government.”
