President Donald Trump is considering “getting involved” in the New York City mayor race to help stop Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, according to a new report.
The New York Times revealed on Wednesday that Trump has had numerous private conversations about the race, asking which candidate would be best suited to defeat Mamdani, according to multiple people aware of the situation. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is doing the same, and Curtis Sliwa is making a longshot Republican bid.
Trump reportedly spoke directly to Cuomo recently, but he has not committed to supporting any candidate. The president and other Republicans have raised the alarm about Mamdani’s socialist views. Trump has called the Democrat a “communist,” something Mamdani denies, and vowed not to let the “total nutjob” destroy New York.
On top of his discussions about the race with influential New Yorkers, Trump has also reportedly been briefed by pollster Mark Penn and longtime friend and former New York City Council President Andrew Stein, both of whom threw their support behind Cuomo.
Trump has also met with Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) about his recommendation for the strongest candidate to go against Mamdani, according to a person familiar with the discussion, cited in the report. The person claimed Trump expressed admiration for all the non-Mamdani candidates, but expressed doubt about Sliwa’s chances.
The Times reported that donors and backers of Adams and Cuomo have “pining” for Trump to get more directly involved in the race, arguing he can help align the Mamdani opposition behind one candidate, rather than Adams, Sliwa, and Cuomo splitting the vote and giving Mamdani a path to an election win.
