‘Ooh!’ Trump Teases Another Run In 2028 During Speech — Says They Only ‘Think’ He Can’t Run
President Donald Trump teased a constitutionally-prohibited 2028 run for the White House, saying someone told him “I don’t think you can” run again.
Trump has been floating the idea of blowing off term limits for years, and one Republican has already introduced an amendment to allow it. Just days ago, Politico ran an item listing four ways Trump could try to hold on to power after 2028:
If Trump decided he wanted to hold onto power past 2028, there are at least four paths he could try:
- He could generate a movement to repeal the 22nd Amendment directly.
- He could exploit a little-noticed loophole in the amendment that might allow him to run for vice president and then immediately ascend back to the presidency.
- He could run for president again on the bet that a pliant Supreme Court won’t stop him.
- Or he could simply refuse to leave — and put a formal end to America’s democratic experiment.
That second “loophole” is incorrect, however — the 12th Amendment states that “no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”
On Thursday morning, Trump gave remarks at a pair of National Prayer Breakfast events — one at Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol and another in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton.
During the latter speech, Trump opened with a crack about “actually” meeting some “very nice Democrats” — and about running again:
They told me I could do it via Skype. And I said, What are we doing? And I said, The prayer breakfast. I said, I’ve been there every year. I’m not doing it via Skype. Instead, I’m going to be there. It’s not that far. You know, it’s like about two minutes down the road. In fact, it was easier to do this than put up a Skype deal– destroy the White House, putting up all that stuff.
But no I want to be here with you. And I have been here with you.
And I do that despite the fact that they say I can’t run again. That’s the expression, “Sir.”.
Then somebody said, “I don’t think you can.”.
Oooh! Heh-heh.
No I want to be with you regardless. And it’s an honor. And that’s something I’ve enjoyed. I’ve actually met some very nice Democrats here. (LAUGHTER) It’s true. I have.
