The Pokémon Company on Tuesday made clear that it had no involvement in the creation of the Department of Homeland Security’s recent video showing its immigration crackdown.
On Monday’s DHS posted a video on social media with the caption, “Gotta Catch ‘Em All.” The video makes use of imagery from the hit animated series Pokémon, as well as its now-iconic theme song. Accompanying those images were clips of DHS agents arresting migrants.
The next day, The Pokémon Company revealed that U.S. government was not given permission to use its intellectual property for the video. In a statement sent to IGN, it said:
We are aware of a recent video posted by the Department of Homeland Security that includes imagery and language associated with our brand,” The Pokémon Company International said in a statement shared with IGN. “Our company was not involved in the creation or distribution of this content, and permission was not granted for the use of our intellectual property.
A day after Pokémon’s statement, DHS was again confronted over unauthorized media. This time, it was comedian Theo Von, who called out the agency for using a clip of him saying, “Heard you got deported, dude. Bye.” Von responded to the video, demanding that DHS take it down.
