Prosecutor Reveals Charlie Kirk’s Suspected Killer Is Leftist Who Believed Kirk ‘Spread Too Much Hate’

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray revealed at a Tuesday press conference that Tyler Robinson, the man arrested for having allegedly shot and killed Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University last week, has left-wing political beliefs and believed Kirk was spreading “too much hate.”

Robinson, 22, has been charged with Kirk’s murder and prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that they are seeking the death penalty. Robinson is accused of shooting Kirk while the 31-year-old father of two was speaking at an event on a Utah college campus. Robinson was taken into custody just days after the Wednesday killing of Kirk.

Gray spoke about Robinson’s politics during a press conference on Tuesday, amid tense debate about the motives of the crime. According to Gray, Robinson’s family saw him become more political and interested in liberal causes in recent years. His politics led to tensions with his family, including his father.

Gray said:

Robinson’s mother explained that over the last year or so, Robinson had become more political and had started to lean more to the left, becoming more pro-gay and trans rights oriented. She stated that Robinson began to date his roommate, a biological male who was transitioning transitioning genders. This resulted in several discussions with family members, but especially between Robinson and his father, who have very different political views.

According to Robinson’s father, Tyler Robinson mentioned Kirk’s Utah event before it happened and said it was a “stupid” location. He also accused Kirk of “spreading hate.”

Once a photo of Robinson was released to the public, both his mother and father recognized him and confronted him about it, convincing him to sit down with a family friend. They convinced Robinson he needed to turn himself in. Gray said Robinson was considering harming himself at the time to avoid jail.

“When asked why he did it, Robinson explained, there is too much evil in the guy, referring to Charlie Kirk. Spreads too much hate,” Gray said.

Robinson is officially being charged with multiple felonies and a capital offense. His charges include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering.

“I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently,” Gray said about seeking the death penalty.

Robinson is being held without bail at Utah County Jail.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) previously told reporters that Robinson had spoken to his family about Kirk in the past and his belief that the Turning Point USA founder was pushing a message of “hate.”
