‘That’s Not How It Works’: Democrat Chides Marjorie Taylor Greene as She Repeatedly Smashes Gavel in Hearing

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took to banging her gavel repeatedly on Tuesday in an attempt to shut down Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM), who was telling her she was not aware of the committee’s rules.

At a DOGE subcommittee hearing, Greene declared after witness testimony that “no one loves veterans more than President [Donald] Trump,” prompting a response from Stansbury, who informed the subcommittee’s chair that she was not recognized to give such a statement.

“No one loves veterans more than President Trump, and he’s made that apparent. That’s why he’s working for peace right now,” Greene said.

“Madam, it is not your time right now,” Stansbury said.

“I’m the chair of this committee,” Green declared, taking to smashing her gavel over and over as Stansbury continued to object.

“That’s not how parliamentary procedure works,” Stansbury said.

“You’re not recognized, Ms. Stansbury,” Greene said, continuing to bang her gavel.

“You’re not recognized either. You can’t just speak anytime you want,” Stansbury shot back, informing Greene, “That’s not how it works.”

“I’m the chair of this committee,” Greene repeated.

“You can smash your gavel all day,” Stansbury said as the two continued biting back and forth, adding, “We’re going to get you a Robert’s Rules of Order,” referring to a manual for parliamentary procedure.

Greene continued hitting her gavel and telling Stansbury she was not recognized as the congresswoman said, “Madam Chair, calm down. Let’s move on.”

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) jumped in to ask Greene to pick the next speaker.

“Can we decide who is going to speak first?” he asked the chair.

“Absolutely, I’m the chair of this committee,” Greene said.

“I know that,” Lynch responded.

Greene then recognized Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) for his line of questioning.

This is not the first time Greene and Stansbury have gotten into a verbal confrontation that saw a gavel being deployed numerous times. During a House subcommittee hearing in May, Greene smashed her gavel dozens of times in an attempt to shut down Stansbury after the congresswoman went over her allotted time.

“You can break my eardrums all you want, Madam Chair,” Stansbury told Greene at the time during their spat.
