Trump Jokes When Reporter Confronts Him About Breach Of Chief’s Phone

President Donald Trump joked with a reporter when he was asked about a reported breach of a phone belonging to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and subsequent attempts to impersonate her.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Wiles’s phone was compromised and she was being spoofed:

In recent weeks, senators, governors, top U.S. business executives and other well-known figures have received text messages and phone calls from a person who claimed to be the chief of staff, the people familiar with the messages said.

But the messages weren’t from Wiles—and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the White House are trying to figure out who is behind the effort and what the goal is, according to some of the people. FBI officials have told the White House they don’t believe a foreign nation is involved, some of the people said.

Trump spoke to reporters as he departed Pennsylvania following a speech in Pittsburgh to announce the U.S. Steel merger with Japan’s Nippon Steel, during which he also announced a steep increase in steel tariffs.

During the gaggle on the tarmac, Trump was asked about the Wiles breach, and expressed confidence, joking that no one could impersonate his chief of staff because she’s one of a kind:

REPORTER: Are you aware of the reports that Susie Wiles’ phone has been breached and somebody’s been impersonating her?

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: I heard that, yeah, I heard.

REPORTER: You’ve heard about that? You know anything about the investigation?

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: She’s a she’s an amazing woman she can handle it, but I’ve heard that they They’ve reached her bones or they tried to impersonate her. Nobody can impersonate Susie. There’s only one Susie. There’s only one

“The White House takes the cybersecurity of all staff very seriously, and this matter continues to be investigated,” a White House spokeswoman said when contacted by WSJ.
