President Donald Trump is saluting West Point for pulling the plug on an awards ceremony that was slated to honor Tom Hanks.

Hanks was scheduled to be feted by the alumni association at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Sept. 25, the Washington Post reported over the weekend.

Hanks was set to be celebrated with a ceremony and a parade honoring him with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, which is given to a citizen who has exemplified the academy’s ideals of duty, honor, and country. Hanks has been a longtime veterans advocate and a driving force on the creation of the World War II Memorial in DC and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, among other initiatives.

Trump, though, applauded the decision not to honor Hanks in a post to his Truth Social platform on Monday.

“Our great West Point (getting greater all the time!) has smartly cancelled the Award Ceremony for actor Tom Hanks,” Trump wrote. “Important move! We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!! Hopefully the Academy Awards, and other Fake Award Shows, will review their Standards and Practices in the name of Fairness and Justice. Watch their DEAD RATINGS SURGE!”

The president did not point to a specific example of the actor’s alleged wokeness. But Hanks has been a longtime donor for the Democratic party, and did support Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former President Barack Obama in 2016.
