President Donald Trump has threatened an “ADDITIONAL 10% tariff” on nations aligning with what he called the “Anti-American policies of BRICS” with “no exceptions.”

BRICS, originally an economic bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has grown into a wider geopolitical force in recent years, expanding in 2024 to include Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the UAE.

With more than half the global population now represented, the group has emerged as a challenge to U.S.-led economic dominance — and has called for reform of institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Trump’s tariff barrage comes as BRICS leaders meet in Rio de Janeiro, calling U.S. duties a “threat” to global economic stability.

Trump’s announcement came late Sunday ahead of the July 9 deadline for new tariff agreements:

I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. Thank you for your attention to this matter! DONALD J. TRUMP, President of The United States of America.

Moments later, the president posted again, this time taking a more aggressive tone on BRICS:

Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

While negotiations had been ongoing, the administration has now moved the implementation date up to Aug. 1, when tariffs will kick in for countries that haven’t struck a deal. Only the U.K. and Vietnam are currently in the clear.
