Viktor Orbán Blames the United States for Being ‘Pro-War’ Against Russia — And Trump Agrees During White House Q&A

During a Friday Q&A at the White House, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blamed the United States for being “pro-war” in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and President Donald Trump later agreed, saying, “[Joe] Biden actually pushed for that war to happen.”

When asked by a reporter why he canceled a previously announced Budapest summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war, Trump said, “They just don’t want to stop yet… If I were president, the war would have never happened.”

Trump announced the summit on Oct. 16 and canceled it a week later, after Russia doubled down on harsh ceasefire demands in a memo to Washington, per reporting from the Financial Times.

Orbán then followed up on Trump’s response, saying “it is no question” that if Trump were president, “there would be no war between Ukraine and Russia.”

He continued, “But what we are speaking about here is more than that. Because without the pressure coming from the United States government — I’m speaking 2022 — the Europeans would not take that hard line, what they have today, on the war… So the pressure was coming from the United States to be more pro-war in Europe.”

“We have to restore something which was ruined and created from here,” Orbán concluded. “That was an enormous mistake, what we have done — the Western world — several years ago, and we have to stop it.” Notably, Orbán was quick to continuously clarify that he was speaking about the United States in 2022, under Biden, looking directly at Trump as he did so.

“Biden actually pushed for that war to happen,” butted in Trump. “That war should have been a one-week war. I don’t know why it’s taking — this is four years… I inherited that mess and we’re getting it solved, along with the eight wars we’ve already ended.”
