Bernie Sanders Says Trump, Musk, and Bezos Make This ‘The Scariest Times In My Lifetime’: ‘That’s Objectively the Truth’

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) declared he is living in the “scariest times” of his life and it’s thanks to President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos.

Sanders spoke with Jon Lovett, once a speechwriter for former President Barack Obama, for Pod Save America while on a rally tour, which the senator said has proven to him that people are “up in arms” about the current administration. Sanders spoke to Lovett from Warren, Michigan, where Lovett said Sanders drew thousands.

Sanders argued we are currently living “in an oligarchy” with a government “for billionaires.”

Lovett told the senator he heard a “gravity” in Sanders’s voice while hearing him speak that he hadn’t heard before, and Sanders admitted he’s terrified of Trump and his billionaire allies like Musk.

“These are, you know, the scariest times in my lifetime, that’s all. I think that’s objectively the truth. You know, it is not just that they want to give tax breaks to billionaires and cut programs to working people,” he said. “Frankly, that’s happened before, but you combine that with the power of the oligarchy in general. You combine that with Mr. Musk owning Twitter and able to send out his messages to hundreds of millions of people.”

The senator then called out Bezos for major editorial shifts at The Washington Post since Trump’s election victory, as well as the president over sweeping cuts to federal funding and his adversarial relationship with some media outlets and his media-related lawsuits.

“You combine that with the fact that people like Bezos, the second wealthiest person in the country, fired or got rid of most of his editorial staff and is going to convert them into a right-wing thing,” Sanders said. “Combine that with the fact that Trump is suing major media outlets and is threatening to investigate PBS and NPR.”

The senator declared it’s a “scary moment” and accused Trump of moving the country “aggressively” towards “authoritarianism.”

“He is now trying to end what the Founding Fathers were pretty smart about — creating a form of government where there were checks and balances, you know, a legislative body, an executive body and a judiciary,” Sanders said.
