Kathy Griffin Estimates She Lost ‘About a Third’ of Her Fans Over Decapitated Trump Photo

Kathy Griffin claimed she lost about a third of her fans as a result of her controversial photoshoot with the fake severed head of Donald Trump.

The response to the 2017 shoot was almost universally negative. In addition to a wave of backlash online, Griffin was placed on a no-fly list and was even investigated for conspiracy to assassinate the president of the United States. She was also fired from her New Year’s Eve gig on CNN with Anderson Cooper

On Friday — the day after the seventh anniversary of the photo’s publication — Griffin appeared on Dan Le Batard’s podcast South Beach Sessions and reflected on the career-changing moment.

“One thing that breaks my heart is why I would say I’ve lost — probably permanently — about a third of my audience because of the Trump thing,” she told Le Batard. “I think I’ve gained some audiences that are maybe a little bit more political, maybe a little bit more liberal; but I used to play the South like crazy because they knew me as somebody that would make fun of Hollywood and the Kardashians and celebrities.”

Le Batard added how surprised he still was that the backlash was so intense.

“I was interrogated under oath,” Griffin continued. “They were seriously considering charging me with conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. That has never happened in the history of comedy — never.”

Griffin said she used to be afraid of simply walking down the street, but now the people who are approach her are “much nicer.”
