Thomas Massie Busts Out Trump Impression to Recall Their Bizarre Chat About ‘Best Genetics’ and Arnold Palmer After the Congressman’s Wife Died
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) busted out his impression of President Donald Trump for comedian Theo Von to detail two wild conversations he had with the president before their current feud.
Massie joined Von on his This Past Weekend podcast where he discussed the current situation with Iran and Israel, as well as Trump’s onslaught of attacks against him. Massie has been one of the more vocal critics on the right pushing back on Trump’s strikes against Iran and getting the United States more involved in escalating fighting between that country and Israel.
In a Truth Social message, Trump said Massie is “not MAGA” and promised to campaign in Kentucky against him.
“Actually, MAGA doesn’t want him, doesn’t know him, and doesn’t respect him. He is a negative force who almost always Votes ‘NO,’ no matter how good something may be. He’s a simple minded ‘grandstander,'” the president wrote.
Massie waved off the criticism, arguing he falls in and out of favor with the president and he’s used to it. The congressman busted out an impression of the president to recall a past Iran debate they had where the president declared he’s “more Libertarian” than Massie, as well as a condolences call after Massie’s wife passed in which Trump talked about his own “genetics” and famous golfer Arnold Palmer.
After Massie’s wife, Rhonda Massie, passed away in June 2024, the congressman recalled getting a message from Trump and calling back. He was shocked to find Trump answering the phone because he’d called from his personal phone.
“When my wife passed away last summer, he had left a very nice message. I would have obviously taken his call, but I was inundated with calls, but he left a really nice message of condolences. And that was thoughtful of him,” Massie said, adding, “People don’t see that side of him.”
He then recalled the whirlwind conversation while impersonating the president:
The first thing I did was to thank him for leaving the message about my wife because I hadn’t done that yet. He said, “That’s a hard one, that’s a very hard one. You know, Arnold Palmer, he played around a lot, but he did love his wife. And when she passed away, it almost killed Arnie. I mean, it was tough on Arnie, but, he’s a tough cookie. You’re a tough cookie too and you’re like Arnie, you’ll get through this.” And then he goes, “I take it back. You’re much tougher than Arnie ever was.
According to Massie, Trump then called him a “sharp cookie” and touted his own “genetics.”
“So then he goes, ‘You’re sharp cookie too. You know, you went to MIT. My uncle, Professor John G. Trump, taught at MIT for 41 years. It’s a record.’ Then he said, ‘I’ve got the best genetics,'” Massie said.
The lawmaker also recalled that after the drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian general, in 2020, Massie was one of the few lawmakers to support a Democratic-led bill requiring congressional approval before declaring war.
At one point, Massie said laughing, Trump declared he was “more Libertarian” than Massie, who is widely considered one of the most-Libertarian leaning Republican lawmakers.
“In that conversation, we talked about war with Iran and he genuinely, I do believe, he genuinely didn’t want war with Iran. His argument to me was that if Congress gave him the authority to threaten them, that he could keep us out of a war with the threat,” Massie recalled.
The lawmaker said Trump was not happy with Massie’s reasoning for opposing him, which boiled down to not wanting to give the president power to declare a war he would not be voting on, should it happen.
“You can’t know that he won’t. And, by the way, he told me, he said, ‘I’m more libertarian than you are,'” Massie said as he and Von laughed.
“Oh man, Donald Trump is an interesting guy. What an anomoly of a human being, I think,” Von said.
“He is,” Massie agreed. “There’ll never be another person like him.”
