The Daily Show Manages to Make State of NYT Less Funny
Twitter was abuzz yesterday with word that The Daily Show had been allowed inside the hallowed halls of The New York Times. Would the Times be ripped to shreds? Would the staff fall for the devious interviewer and make fools of themselves? Not so much.
The Daily Show has always done its sharpest stuff when showcasing the idiocy and hypocrisy of its subjects. However, it would be hard to argue at this point that anyone at the NYT is anything but painfully aware and upfront about the state of the journalism biz, or that, editorially speaking, they have not been leading the transition-to-online charge. So where’s the funny in that? Wherever it is, The Daily Show missed it by a mile. Instead, producing a five minute segment wherein Jason Jones comes off looking like a over-sized juvenile throwing sucker punches (also, the Huffington Post has yet to make a profit as Jones suggests at one point), meanwhile the Times people come off looking like grown-ups making time for the kiddies. Perhaps someone should have sent him to the Conde Nast building instead. Word has it they are only just discovering the Web.
