Colorado Rockies Cement Themselves As One of the Worst Teams in MLB History After Losing 50th Game

Just a third of the way into the 2025 MLB season, the Colorado Rockies have established themselves as one of the worst teams in league history.
The Rockies on Sunday lost to the New York Mets 5-3 to fall to an impossibly abysmal 9-50. As noted in a report from ESPN, it is the worst record through a team’s first 59 games in the modern era. Only the 1884 Kansas City Unions and 1876 Cincinnati Red Stockings got to 50 losses quicker.
Last season, the White Sox became the worst team of the modern era (post-1901) when they finished 41-121. Throughout the entire history of the league, the White Sox were second in total losses behind the 1899 Cleveland Spiders — who lost 134.
Somehow, someway — just one season later — the Rockies are on pace to outdo the White Sox and the Spiders. At the time of writing, the team is on pace for just 25 wins. Should that hold, the team would end up with an league-record 137 losses.
ESPN’s report included several other figures to put into perspective just how bad the 2025 Rockies are. Of the 20 series played so far this season, for example, the Rockies have been swept in 10 of them. Sunday’s loss to the Mets — another series sweep — gave the Rockies their fourth eight-game losing streak of the season. Again, they’ve played just 59 games.
