ESPN’s Mike Greenberg Gets Laughed Off the Set After Suggesting UConn Could Make the NBA Playoffs
ESPN’s Mike Greenberg was ripped to shreds Monday morning when he suggested the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team could make the NBA playoffs.
The reigning NCAA national champions have appeared in prime shape to repeat this year, winning their first two tournament games by 39 and 27 points. Some, like Greenberg, believe it’s a foregone conclusion that the Huskies will win their second straight championship.
On Monday’s episode of Get Up, Greenberg jokingly asked college basketball analyst Seth Greenberg whom he would take in a seven-game series between the Boston Celtics and UConn Huskies. The Celtics are one of the best teams in the NBA and, as of Monday, lead the Eastern Conference by 11 games.
Then, Mike got serious when he brought up the lesser teams.
“So look, I was obviously kidding about the Celtics,” Mike said, “but let me change the question, Jay [Williams]: if they were in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, would they make the playoffs? I’m looking at teams that are eight games up .500 in the play-in now. They’re better than that.”
Seth shook his head in disbelief and yelled, “Come on!” Williams immediately burst into laughter and told Mike, “I’m not doing that.”
Mike stood firm and claimed UConn was an “NBA team.”
“They’re not,” Williams fired back. “They execute like one, but their talent level I would not say would be able to make the play-in.”
Seth, on the other hand, was still shocked by the subject.
“Possibly?” he said. “They had no chance!”
