‘Frustration With You Guys!’ Rory McIlroy Lashes Out at Media in Awkward Presser After US Open Meltdown

Golf superstar Rory McIlroy lashed out at the media in an awkward press conference following another disappointing round at the U.S Open.

Following his breakthrough triumph at The Masters in April, McIlroy has gotten increasingly distant with the media — declining to speak with the press following each of his last six major championship rounds. Following a third round four-over-par 74 which left him at +10 and well out of contention of winning the US Open at Oakmont Country Club, McIlroy did finally speak with the media and was asked about his press blackout.

“You’re so transparent for us and very available,” a reported asked. “Yesterday was six major rounds in a row you’ve stepped away. Has that been part and parcel to the frustration on the golf course? What do you attribute it to?”

“It’s more a frustration with you guys,” McIlroy replied. He added, “I’ve been totally available for the last few years, and I’m not saying — maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing.”

McIlroy cited a recent controversy in which he was forced to change one of his clubs prior to May’s PGA Championship because it was deemed to be in violation with the rules as part of the reason for his strained relationship with the press. But the 36-year-old golf great (who smashed a tee marker during Friday’s second round) hinted at larger frustrations. Asked if he feels like he’s “earned the right” to bail on media engagements, McIlroy made clear he does not believe he is obligated to participate.

“I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah,” he said.

The press conference came to an awkward conclusion when he was asked what he was looking for in Sunday’s final round.

“Hopefully a round in under four and a half hours and get out of here,” he said.
