The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has banned transgender women from competing in women’s sports — in compliance with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump.
The committee announced the ban quietly via its updated athlete safety policy. The language enforcing the ban is extremely vague — as it does not mention the word transgender and only makes reference to Trump’s executive order by number.
“The USOPC is committed to protecting opportunities for athletes participating in sport,” the new rule reads. “The
USOPC will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders with oversight responsibilities, e.g., IOC, IPC, NGBs, to ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201 and the Ted Stevens Olympic & Amateur Sports Act, 36 U.S.C § 22501, et. seq.”
Executive order 14201 is titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.” That order states that the White House is not just looking for a trans women ban on the national level. They’re also seeking a ban on the international level as well.
“The Secretary of State shall use all appropriate and available measures to see that the International Olympic Committee amends the standards governing Olympic sporting events to promote fairness, safety, and the best interests of female athletes by ensuring that eligibility for participation in women’s sporting events is determined according to sex and not gender identity or testosterone reduction,” the order reads.
In a statement given to The New York Times, the USOPC said, “As a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations.”
