‘Mad Dog’ Russo Absolutely Loses It Over Mets Celebrating Home Run Record During Losing Skid: ‘You Trail by 6 Games!’

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo went off on the New York Mets for making such a big deal out of a home run record while the team was on a losing streak.

On Tuesday, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso hit his 254th career home run in a game against the Atlanta Braves. The home run gave him sole possession of the franchise record, and the SNY broadcast booth took a moment to recognize the achievement.

The next morning on First Take, Russo argued that it wasn’t worth celebrating while the team was in a the middle of a brutal stretch of games. Going into Tuesday’s game against the Braves, the Mets had lost 11 of their last 12 games.

“You can’t even tell what the home run record was before this nonsense!” Russo said. “This is ridiculous! And, by the way, if the Mets love Alonso so much, why did’t they pay him in the offseason, for crying out loud? He was a free agent! They didn’t want to pay him a nickel! He bounced around all over the place, and then he came back — basically with his hat out. ‘Please sign me.’

Russo then called out the team for all of the pageantry surrounding the milestone homer.

“Furthermore, did you see what the Mets are doing tonight?” he continued. “Can somebody put this on the board? Now, when I asked for it, for crying out loud! Put this on the board!”

“You know what they’re doing tonight? They put out a release late last night. ‘Make sure if you go in the ballpark tonight, you get to your seats early for a special presentation with Pete Alonso.’ What? That’s in August! You trail by six games!” concluded Russo.
