Popular sideline reporter Rachel DeMita was fired by rapper Ice Cube’s Big3 basketball league after she tweeted Caitlin Clark highlights during a game.
DeMita rose to fame as the host of NBA 2KTV — the in-game show for the NBA 2K game series. Last season, she joined the three-on-three basketball league. Her resume also includes sideline duties for Duke University’s football team.
Last week, Clark returned to the court after a lengthy absence due to a quadriceps injury. During that game, she quickly showed she hadn’t lost a step when she buried a deep 3-pointer against the New York Liberty. DeMita tweeted a clip of the play with the caption, “for those who questioned the hype.”
That tweet was posted in the middle of a Big3 game that DeMita was working. According to a report from Front Office Sports, that was viewed as the “final straw” by league officials:
The “final straw” that led to the parting was when DeMita tweeted about Caitlin Clark highlights this past Saturday during a game which she was working as a courtside correspondent for Big3, sources told Front Office Sports.
A Big3 spokesperson declined to comment, saying that the league does not comment on personnel matters. DeMita’s agent could not immediately be reached for comment.
The reason for the firing is especially significant given Big3’s connection to Clark. Before her rookie season the WNBA, Big3 offered her a staggering $5 million to play just eight games. Clark ultimately declined the offer.
