Seahawks Backup QB Drew Lock Gets Emotional After Stunning Upset Over Eagles: ‘I’ll Remember That Play Call for the Rest of My Life’

Backup Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock provided one of the year’s best interviews when he got emotional following the team’s upset over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Due to an injury starter Geno Smith, Lock stepped in and started for the team’s Week 14 game against the San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks lost 28-16 — their fourth straight loss.

Ahead of Monday night’s game against the Eagles, Smith was listed as active. Though there was some hope Smith would return, Lock was ultimately named the starter.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Lock led his team on a 92-yard drive capped off by a go-ahead touchdown with less than 30 seconds left. The Eagles would fail to tie or take the lead on their ensuing drive.

Lock nearly came to tears when he thanked his teammates for “rallying” around him.

“It’s been a long time,” the 27-year-old said. “I’m just blessed. Blessed with a great group of guys, a great city, great coaching staff. It’s awesome.”

The Seahawks took the lead with a 29-yard TD pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. For Lock — who hasn’t started a game since 2021 with the Denver Broncos — it’s a play that he’ll always cherish.

“I’ll remember that play call for the rest of my life,” Lock said. “We’re breaking the huddle. I knew Jax had the one-on-one… I said, ‘Hey Jax, if you’re one-on-one, I’m throwing you this pill.’ Sure enough, (the Eagles) gave us the one-on-one look. The corner was soft (and) Jax hit him with some speed.

Lock even questioned if he still had what it took to be an NFL QB after being inactive for so long.

“It’s so hard to describe the feeling of not playing for so long, or at least what feels like a really long time to me,” Lock said. “And then you sit there, you watch games, you wonder, ‘Can I do this still? I haven’t been out there on the field.’ That’s the human nature of it. You get back out there last week. I’m like, ‘You know what? I’m the man still. I can go do this.

“And then you got another test this week where I didn’t know if I was gonna play or not. Sure enough, I ended up playing. And the boys around me rallied. Gosh, it feels so good. I’m so proud of everybody tonight.”
