Serena Williams Calls Out Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Live at ESPYs
Serena Williams took a direct shot at Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker during a segment about women’s sports at Thursday’s ESPY Awards.
Serena was joined by her sister Venus Williams and comedian Quinta Brunson. The three joked about the narratives that have formed as women’s sports — most notably basketball — have reached wider audiences.
Brunson explained that when discussing women’s sports, they can be referred to using terms like “athlete” and “competitor.”
“Call then whatever you want,” Brunson said.
“Just don’t use the B-word,” Serena responded.
“Never use the B-word,” Venus added.
Serena then said, “You know who you are,” likely referring to the time Pat McAfee called Caitlin Clark a “White bitch” on his show.
“So go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports because they are sports,” Venus later said.
“Except you, Harrison Butker,” Serena fired back. “We don’t need you.”
“At all,” Brunson said. “Like ever.”
Butker caused a stir in May for the speech he gave at Benedictine College’s commencement ceremony. In addition to calling out President Joe Biden and “danger gender ideologies,” Butker told the female graduates that most of them would be more excited about becoming wives and mothers than their careers.
