‘The Best There Ever Was’: Willie Mays’ Passing Evokes Emotional Tribute from Longtime SF Giants Announcer

The San Francisco Giants tapped longtime announcer Jon Miller to deliver a touching tribute to life and legacy of all-time great Willie Mays.

The team announced Tuesday night that Mays died peacefully that afternoon at 93. Regarded by many as the greatest to ever play the game, Mays was a two-time MVP and 24-time All-Star. As noted by Miller in the team’s tribute, he also won the award for Rookie of the Year four years after Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier.

“His charisma and joyfulness were infectious,” Miller said. “He was often seen playing stickball with kids in the neighborhood.”

Miller then detailed the New York Giants’ move to San Francisco, where Mays “brought his exciting brand of baseball to a new audience.”

“Making impossible catches, speeding around the bases, launching home runs,” he said, “Willie’s showmanship and style were undeniable.”

After his playing days, Mays continued to give back to the baseball community by mentoring new generations of players. Fellow Giants great Barry Bonds — Mays’ godson — said on Instagram that Mays “helped shape me to be who I am today.”

“As baseball endures, so do Willie’s values of consistency, dedication, and courage,” Miller said. “With an indelible mark on our hearts, he leaves us with a lasting reminder to work hard and find joy in this great game and this extraordinary life.

“Say, ‘Hey,’ Willie Mays, the best there ever was.”
