‘The Refs Botched it!’ Joe Scarborough Goes OFF on NFL Officials Following Chiefs Win
Joe Scarborough on Monday morning went off on the referees for game-altering call made during the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.
In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills, the Bills went for it on fourth down at the Chiefs’ 41-yard line. Quarterback Josh Allen kept it himself for a QB sneak, and he was held up by the defense right at the 40-yard line — where the first down marker was. One ref spotted the ball right at the line to give them the first down, while the ref on the other sideline ran over to the pile and marked the ball short of the first down. The official call was that Allen was short of the first down, and the play went under review.
After looking it over, the refs determined that Allen was indeed short of a first down, resulting in a turnover on downs to give the Chiefs the ball.
The call was met with a great deal of backlash online, with some even accusing the refs of outright cheating for the Chiefs.
On Morning Joe, Scarborough claimed the officials “botched” it.
“It happened again last night,” Scarborough said in reference to big calls going the Chiefs’ way. “It happened on a key drive once again. Clearly, the refs botched it. You had Josh Allen on a 4th & 1 clearly make it over the first down line; and you you had the worst mark… The guy at the top of the screen had it. Guy coming at the bottom clearly moved the ball back a half yard. Once again, you had the announcers inside saying — you know, in the booth — saying, ‘He clearly made it.’
“How the guy at the bottom of the screen — here comes the guy at the top of the screen. He’s got the mark right! And this is on one of the critical drives, but it is what it is.”
