YES Network Booth Fights Back Tears as They Announce Death of Yankees Legend’s 14-Year-Old Son

The YES Network broadcast booth was overcome with emotion Sunday after learning about and informing the viewers of the death of Brett Gardner’s teenage son.

Moments before the start of the New York Yankees’ spring training game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees published a statement on social media announcing the death of 14-year-old Miller Gardner. In the statement, Brett and his wife Jessica Gardner said Miller had “fallen ill along with several other family members while on vacation.”

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,” Brett and Jessica said, “but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.

“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day,” they continued.

Brett spent his entire 14-year career with the Yankees and helped the team win a World Series in 2009.

In the second inning of the game, YES Network announcer Michael Kay informed viewers of Miller’s tragic passing.

“Our hearts go out to Brett and Jessica,” Kay said. “There are really no words. We are so, so sorry for your loss.”

Although Kay still attempted to call the game in front of them, the broadcast was mostly silent until the Yankees got the third out to go to the bottom of the inning. Former Yankees manager Joe Girardi — who was on that championship team with Gardner — fought back tears in the booth.

“It’s hard because,” Girardi said before falling silent for several seconds, “not only is Brett and Jessica part of our family, their kids become part of your family because they’re in the kids room all the time and you see them all the time, and it’s — I just can’t imagine what you’re going through.”
