Trump Calls Into Pat McAfee Show — Gushes Over ESPN Host Saying ‘Such Nice Things About Me’
President Donald Trump called into ESPN star Pat McAfee’s show on Tuesday, and immediately joked he only did it because McAfee has said “such nice things about me” in the past.
The president came on The Pat McAfee Show right after wrapping a Veteran’s Day speech at Arlington National Cemetery — a speech in which he said the U.S. would start celebrating “Victory Day,” considering “we won the wars” for European countries like France and England.
Trump said it was fitting he called into the ESPN program on the holiday, since “about 92% of veterans” voted for him, he claimed. McAfee and Trump ran through a number of topics, including Trump’s take on the government shutdown, the Ryder Cup in golf, and which NFL coaches would make a good president.
The president complimented Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, saying he was “great” and “some coach.” He then said he would like to enlist 4-5 of the top NFL coaches as generals, because you have to be an expert strategist to be an elite coach.
“Ultimately, it’s all about strategy… I’ll bet you some of these coaches would make great warring generals,” Trump said.
Trump also took a moment to bash ex-President Joe Biden, saying his administration had a bunch of “sadists” who were in charge of veteran affairs. He said that is now over with, though, now that he has put in “loving people” to handle vets.
McAfee also got Trump to give an “Ooh-rah” shout into the phone, in honor of the Marines; McAfee and his crew were broadcasting live from the Marine Corps. Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina.
Another interesting moment was when Trump discussed his appearance on the Fox broadcast of the Washington Commanders-Detroit Lions game on Sunday. Trump ribbed Washington for its team name, after it was changed from the Redskins in 2020.
“It was a little bit of a blowout game, in all fairness, with the commanders, as opposed to the Redskins,” Trump said. “What happened to the Redskins, by the way?”
As for the “nice things” McAfee has said about Trump in the past, it is unclear which remarks in particular he was referring to.
But McAfee did have UFC boss Dana White on his show last year, shortly after the assassination attempt in Butler, PA., and White complimented Trump as one of the “toughest, most resilient human beings” he had ever met.
McAfee also preemptively fired back at anti-Trump critics who were going to be upset he had the president on his show.
“He’s commander-in-chief, obviously, if we have the opportunity to talk to him, we’re going to,” McAfee said. “And he is hilarious.”
