‘Absolutely Not!’ Fox Business Hosts Brawl Over Trump’s Tariffs
Fox Business Network’s Charles Payne and Dagen McDowell brawled on Thursday over President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs.
The disagreement began when Payne dismissed the importance of the stock market’s freefall since Trump announced the launch of his global trade war.
“The rich have money but they watch the stock market, you know, and the market might be at a point where the top 10 percent slow down their spending. It’s already slowed down for everybody else,” argued Payne. “They’ve masked it because they have taken up the slack. So what happens when they start to slow down? That does increase the odds of a recession and things like that. But again, these are just almost mechanical talking points when most people were already in their own personal recession — hence the election outcome that we got.”
McDowell then jumped in to argue that the tariffs will “hurt used car buyers” because “there are no American cars. There’s no such thing. There’s not car that is manufactured in the United States that is 100% American made,” while pointing out that even Tesla’s stock price is down.
She also submitted that the tariffs would cost the very automotive manufacturing jobs they’re meant to produce, prompting Payne to ask her where companies will sell their cars instead.
“They sell them to China, They sell them to China and they sell them to Europe!” answered McDowell.
They can also just make the parts here. They can make the cars here,” suggested Payne.
“No, they can’t — absolutely not! That’s a fallacy,” shot back McDowell.
“It’s impossible?” pressed Payne.
“Yeah. 10 years, 15 years, 20 years, how about it?” scoffed McDowell.
“It wouldn’t take that long,” posited Payne. “Anyway-”
“To build German engines in the United States? Okay,” interjected McDowell.
“Sometimes I feel like I live in a third world country when I hear people talk about how-, what we cannot do,” mused Payne. “We can do anything in this country, anything that anyone else is doing, we can do it, we probably did it first.”
