AOC Mocks Byron Donalds’ Speaker Bid: Last Thing He Did in the Oversight Committee Was ‘Submit Falsified Evidence’

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed Rep. Byron Donalds’ newly-announced House Speaker bid with a reminder of when they clashed on the Oversight and Accountability Committee.

Ocasio-Cortez spoke on Sunday with MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan, who asked about the House’s ongoing paralysis from their failure to elect a new speaker to succeed Kevin McCarthy. Since Donalds announced himself as one of the nine Republicans running to be the next GOP nominee, Hasan asked Ocasio-Cortez for her thoughts about that.

The New York representative shook her head while making her disapproval quite clear:

He’s only served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The last thing that he did in the Oversight Committee was attempt to submit falsified evidence to an impeachment hearing. I think it helps to know where all the bathrooms are before you run for the U.S. House of Representatives, personally, and I think it helps to have some real experience in one of most complex legislative bodies in the world before you try to run it.

Ocasio-Cortez referred to last month’s committee hearing where she accused Donalds of using “fabricated” evidence about Hunter Biden to advance the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

The dispute revolved around a text exchange Donalds displayed at the hearing that displayed a conversation between the president’s son, Hunter, and the president’s brother, James Biden. Donald held this up to advance the GOP’s claim that President Biden benefitted from his family’s foreign business transactions.

Later in the hearing, Ocasio-Cortez called Donalds out on this, accusing him of using a “fabricated image [that] excluded critical context that changed the underlying meaning and allegation that was presented up on that screen by this committee and by members of this committee.”

“I don’t know where it came from. I don’t know if it was the staff of the committee, but it was not the direct screenshot from that phone,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She proceeded to denounce the hearing as a “waste of time,” even as she conceded Donalds was allowed to submit the fabricated image.
