Bernie Sanders Slams Extreme Right-Winger’ Trump: ‘Total Phony and Political Opportunist’
Well, it’s definitely that time of year!
No, not the time when insecure haters mock Melania Trump’s fashion-forward White House Christmas decor. It’s the post-midterm start to the 2020 presidential electioneering phase.
Enter 2016 Democratic candidate (and the presumptive primary favorite for 2020?) Senator Bernie Sanders, who appeared on CNN’s New Day Tuesday morning. Sanders’ often hits similar notes during cable news appearances, but this felt more in line with a pre-Presidential run, and in that context was decided to be more newsworthy.
Host John Berman set Sanders up by asking about a passage from his book critical of Trump that read “other than his racism and xenophobia, it’s not clear that he really has any strong beliefs other than those that are politically expedient.”
The Vermont Senator was all too happy to clarify what he meant exactly by that passage, adding that, in his opinion, Trump is a “total phony and political opportunist.”
He continued to blast the Commander in Chief for his shifting political positions, saying of Trump, “he now condemns legislation that I introduced called Medicare for all. He Earlier in his life he supported Medicare for all. This guy supported a tax on wealth. He was pro-choice. But he moves with the wind and right now he is in an extreme right-winger because he thinks that’s how you get votes.”
“What he is doing which disturbs me very much above and beyond tax breaks for billionaires, above and beyond trying to throw 32 million people off of health insurance all of which he is doing, he is doing what no president in modern history has done in trying to divide the American people up based on the color of our skin or country we came from or religion or sexual orientation. That is outrageous.”
