Bob Schieffer Asks If Americans Would Be Able To Come Together As They Did After 9/11

In a personal note on his show today, Bob Schieffer recounted his personal memories of 9/11 and wondered if Americans would ever be able to come together again as they did in the wake of that fateful day.

Schieffer told viewers “how helpless” many in New York felt as the devastation happened around them. He added that because he is a grandfather of twins, he had a strong emotional reaction to hearing that eleven twins had lost siblings on 9/11. However, Schieffer also remembered one of the more positive moments from that day: members of Congress on both sides coming together to sing “God Bless America.”

This led Schieffer to wonder ask if the same sense of national unity we felt after the terrorist attacks ten years ago would ever return in our lifetimes.

The unity would not last long, but I was there. I saw it happen. Ten years later, I sometimes wonder if we could still come together as we did then. To be honest, sometimes I’m not sure. But I want to believe with all my heart that we could.
