Chris Christie on United: ‘The Attitude of That Airline is Awful’
On Wednesday, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie appeared on Fox & Friends to discuss a variety of topics, including United Airlines’ public relations disaster stemming from a senior citizen being forcibly removed from an overbooked flight. Christie showed he had no love lost for the airline, which he knows intimately, as he claimed that it controls 70% of the flights from Newark Liberty International Airport.
“What we saw the other night, unfortunately, is typical of the attitude of United Airlines,” explained Christie. “Now, I know that because 70% of the flights at Newark Airport, in and out, are United Airlines. And the attitude of that airline is awful!” Christie blamed the merger with Continental Airlines in 2010, feeling that United’s employees were not properly integrated into the new corporate culture.
“I expect that if I’m boarded onto the plane, that I’m gonna stay on the plane,” he added. “I think to do what they did…everybody who flies commercially knows that United is awful.” He cited conversations with his constituents to back up his claim, and urged the Trump administration to roll back the regulations that allow airlines to overbook flights.
Christie also discussed White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s series of gaffes on Tuesday, stemming from his grossly false claims that Adolf Hitler never use chemical weapons
“Here should be a general rule for anybody involved in public life, whether you’re a governor, a press secretary for the president, or whether you’re a host for Fox & Friends,” said Christie. “Don’t bring up Hitler. Ever! There’s no winning in bringing up Hitler. Write that down. It’s very important. Don’t bring up Hitler! You can’t win any conversation about Hitler. He is the most despicable human being in the history of the world. You can’t make any comparisons like that.”
When asked if “the mainstream media” is harping on this too much, Christie disagreed. “Well, listen: This is the game we play. If you’re the White House Press Secretary, you know that!”
