CNN Calls BS on Gavin Newsom in Brutal Fact Check

CNN aired a montage of California Gov. Gavin Newsom using the term “Latinx” on Thursday after the governor falsely claimed no one in his office had ever used the word.

During a controversial interview with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk this month, Newsom attempted to distance himself from some of his more liberal policies in the past, including the use of the term “Latinx.”

“Not one person ever in my office has ever used the word Latinx,” claimed Newsom during the interview.

CNN KFile senior editor Andrew Kaczynski fact-checked Newsom’s remarks on Thursday’s Erin Burnett OutFront, airing several clips of the governor using the term between 2020 and 2023.

“We did find someone who used it repeatedly in his office. Let’s take a listen to this,” said Kaczynski, before playing four clips of Newsom referring to “the Latinx community.”

CNN also displayed four examples of Newsom using the term on social media during the same time period.

“You see there, that is a lot of use of ‘Latinx’ by him for somebody who said that nobody in his office has ever used that phrase,” noted Kaczynski.

The network also called out Newsom for trying to distance himself from a California law that allowed transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.

“It turns out in 2014, years before I was governor, there was a law established that established the legal principles that allow trans athletes in women’s sports,” said Newsom during his interview with Kirk. “But the issue of fairness is completely legit. It is an issue of fairness and I think Democrats have lost that.”

Kaczynski reacted, “In that statement, he’s kind of making it sound like he wasn’t involved in this at all. He’s like, ‘Oh it was 2014, years before I was governor.’ Like, you mean when you were the lieutenant governor? When you actively defended and praised that law?”

He then played a clip of Newsom praising the governor at the time for protecting transgender rights in schools and in the state in general.

In a statement to CNN, Newsom’s office claimed, “Latinx is not a term that is regularly used by the administration.”
