CNN’s Abby Phillip Gives Brutal History Of Past 5 GOP Speakers: ‘Ousted,’ ‘Quit,’ ‘Pushed Out,’ ‘In Prison,’ ‘Resigned’
CNN host Abby Phillip recalled the chaotic history of the past five Republican House speakers on Wednesday following Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ousting.
“As Margaret Brennan said, quick fact check, it was Republicans who, even prior to that vote that weekend, failed to pass their own bills to fund the government,” said Phillip on her show CNN Primetime. “But if you look at the recent history of Republican speakers, the cause of death becomes a little clearer.”
The CNN host then listed the past five Republican House speakers and what led to their departures:
McCarthy, ousted. Paul Ryan, quit in disgust over his right flank. John Boehner, pushed out by the Freedom Caucus. Dennis Hastert, spent time in prison after admitting sexual abuse. And the hyper-partisan Newt Gingrich, who faced ethical complaints, resigned before his own caucus staged a rebellion.
Phillip concluded, “So, perhaps the issue isn’t actually Democrats, but the insatiable thirst for rebellion in the Republican conference.”
McCarthy was removed as speaker of the House on Tuesday after eight Republicans, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), voted with Democrats to vacate the speakership.
In a speech following his removal, McCarthy lashed out at both House Democrats and the eight Republicans who voted against him, declaring, “They are not conservatives.”
