CNN’s Amanda Carpenter: Trump Attacked McCain To Distract from Russia Investigation

While discussing President Donald Trump’s recent tweets targeting the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on CNN, Amanda Carpenter said the attacks were to really distract people from the Russia investigation and to quash any criticism from within the Republican party.

“It’s really sad that the president of the United States would put the daughter, someone who lost her father, in the position of having to defend his grave. But this isn’t really about John McCain. President Trump wants to distract from the real questions about the Russia investigation and shut down internal Republican criticism,” Carpenter said.

“A few weeks ago he said that never-Trump Republicans were, quote, ‘slightly dangerous’. Yes, they are to his campaign because if enough Republicans say they’ve had enough of this nonsense, they’re fatigued, they’re fed up and stay home, he will lose in 2020,” she continued.

Carpenter said because many Democrats weren’t enthusiastic about Hillary Clinton in 2016, many stayed home and Trump is in danger of the same apathy going into 2020.

“There may be Republicans who stay home because they’re fed up with Donald Trump’s never-ending stream of tweets,” she said. “And so what he is trying to do by attacking John McCain is going after anyone who criticizes him. And isn’t it just so weak for him to attack someone who has passed away and can’t defend himself and will force his grieving daughter to do it for him?”
