CNN’s Avlon Tears Into Ron Johnson Over False Flag Capitol Riot Conspiracy Theories: ‘Frankly Pathetic,’ A ‘Total Dereliction of Duty’
CNN’s John Avlon tore into Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for advancing “pathetic,” false claims about storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Avlon joined his New Day colleagues on Wednesday to discuss the hearing that the Senate Homeland Security and Rules committees held to address the security failures behind the Jan. 6 insurrection. During the proceeding, Johnson blamed the invasion on “fake Trump protestors” who “probably planned this,” despite the repeated debunking of claims that it was sparked by outside provocateurs.
Referencing Johnson’s comments, New Day anchor John Berman turned to Avlon and sarcastically remarked, “if only the people who stormed the Capitol had some kind of insignia that let people know who they were or who they supported.”
“Why is this man so desperate to rewrite the history here?” Berman asked.
“Ron Johnson seems to reach for conspiracy theories now when he’s confronted with uncomfortable facts. He is carrying a lot of water for the former president,” Avlon said. “That is just frankly pathetic. It is a total dereliction of duty. It shows absolutely no interest in following up with any of the questions that really need to be asked.”
Avlon went on to say Johnson is “responsible” for how so many of Trump’s supporters have bought into “nonsense” conspiracies. Alisyn Camerota hypothesized that “maybe he’s fallen into a QAnon rabbit hole. He seems to really be clutching at this and believing it. Maybe he’s just lost all critical thinking skills.”
Later in the show, Avlon held a Reality Check segment shooting down Johnson’s conspiracies and his “hyperpartisan denial” of the evidence against them. He also reiterated that the most troubling part of this is that Johnson is “fanning the flames of disinformation.”
