CNN’s Berman: Trump Was ‘Flat-Out Lying’ When He Said He Didn’t Know Whitaker

CNN’s John Berman called out Donald Trump on Wednesday over reports that the president spoke with now-acting attorney general Matt Whitaker extensively despite his recent insistence to the contrary.

The remarks came during a New Day panel discussion on the New York Times report saying Trump tried to order the Justice Department to go after two his political enemies, Hillary Clinton and James Comey. erman focused on the details of how Trump apparently spoke multiple times to Whitaker, then-chief of staff to Jeff Sessions, about whether the Justice Department would investigate and prosecute Hillary Clinton.

“We know the president has been asking Matt Whitaker, his new acting attorney general, about what the Justice Department was doing with Hillary Clinton for the past year,” Berman said. “Which among other things proves the president was flat out lying when he said he didn’t know Matt Whitaker.”

This segued into discussions about the intent of any DOJ investigation into Trump’s political foes, and indications that Whitaker “played along” with Trump’s demands. CNN legal analyst Laura Coates said former White House counsel Don McGhan‘s 30 hours of testimony to Robert Mueller could go a long way in determining whether the nature of Trump’s intent and whether he ever contradicted himself.
