CNN’s Cuomo to Rep. Cummings: Aren’t Democrats Responsible for Baltimore Failings?
New Day host Chris Cuomo challenged Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who represents Freddie Gray’s district, to explain why people in Baltimore were blaming Republicans for poor urban policy when Democrats, especially African-American Democrats, had run the city for so long.
“You guys are as responsible for what has and hasn’t been done as anybody else, isn’t that fair?” Cuomo asked.

“Come on, Chris,” Cummings said. “It’s not about personalities, it’s about policy. And you know and I know that a lot of the policies coming down from Washington — coming down from the state, actually, too — but coming from Washington are not necessarily kind to urban areas.”
Cummings cited lead poisoning, for which Gray’s family had received a settlement years ago. “We just found out that that budget has been cut 33%, the neighborhood’s budget figure has been cut some 70%,” Cummings said. “So, come on.”
