ESPN: Sorry We Covered Michael Sam’s Locker Room Showering
ESPN released a statement Wednesday saying that the cable sports channel “failed” to appropriately report on Michael Sam‘s role as an openly gay figure in the NFL.
The previous day, correspondent Josina Anderson appeared on SportsCenter and reported in detail that Sam had not been spotted showering in the locker room by other St. Louis Rams players. Sam is currently at training camp with the rest of his teammates. Anderson cited one teammate as saying that Sam is “respecting our space.”
“ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report,” ESPN said in its statement, according to the Washington Post. “Clearly yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports.”
Sam came out as gay in February.
