‘Failure To Govern’: Swalwell Claims Shutdown Is Impossible To Avoid Because McCarthy ‘Lives In Fear’ Of Losing His Job ‘Every Day’

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) slammed Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as putting his job ahead of the country because he “lives in fear” of losing it “every day.”

As the possibility of a government shutdown looms over the country, McCarthy’s stopgap bill that would have given Republicans more time to negotiate failed on Friday. Twenty-one Republicans  in the House joined Democrats across the aisle to vote down McCarthy’s bill.

Moreover, GOP lawmakers such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) have openly spoken about working with Democrats to oust McCarthy from the speakership. Swalwell told MSNBC host Ali Velshi that McCarthy was putting his own interests ahead of the country.

“He’s afraid that he would lose his job, so he puts his own job ahead of millions of others, whose jobs will be at risk in fewer than about 30 hours,” the California lawmaker claimed.

Swalwell also slammed Republicans by claiming they have failed to govern and labeled them “chaos agents.”

“MAGA Republicans tonight are the failures,” Swalwell said. “They have failed to govern, they have failed to fund and in their failure to govern and fund they have failed to protect.”

“Because he lives in fear, because he sees shadows every day and because he sees his own job as more important than anyone else’s, we are going to suffer through this shutdown,” he concluded.
