Fox & Friends Ridicules Hamilton Canceling Kennedy Center Run as Trump Protest: ‘It Was Never Non-Partisan!’
Fox & Friends openly derided the recent decision made by the producers of Hamilton to cancel its run at the Kennedy Center as a protest to President Donald Trump appointing himself chair and firing its board members.
In a post on his Truth Social account a month ago, Trump blasted the center for featuring “drag shows” he said were “specifically targeting” young people:
At my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., GREAT AGAIN. I have decided to immediately terminate multiple individuals from the Board of Trustees, including the Chairman, who do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture. We will soon announce a new Board, with an amazing Chairman, DONALD J. TRUMP! Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP.
The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!
On Wednesday, the producer of the hit musical, Jeffrey Seller, released a statement on why he was canceling a 2026 run at the Washington, DC, cultural center, which was first reported by the New York Times. Michael Paulson reported:
“This latest action by Trump means it’s not the Kennedy Center as we knew it,” the show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, said in a joint interview on Wednesday with its lead producer, Jeffrey Seller. “The Kennedy Center was not created in this spirit, and we’re not going to be a part of it while it is the Trump Kennedy Center. We’re just not going to be part of it.”
In this context, Fox & Friends derided the decision, signaling to its right-of-center viewers what the talking points should be. During an introductory news read, Carly Shimkus ran a clip of former Vice President Mike Pence getting booed by the musical’s audience in New York as a not-so-subtle reminder of the long-standing partisan lightning rod this hit play has come to represent.
“Don’t act like the Kennedy Center was ever nonpartisan,” said Brian Kilmeade, overlooking the fact that no sitting president has ever taken over its leadership and promised a political approach to programming, telling supporters he wants to make its programming less “woke.”
“It was always been to the left,” Kilmeade continued. “So the president says, I just want to have a say over a girl, over an institution that I think needs to broaden out its fan base. Remember, they told him basically not to show up for four years. Now that he’s back, he goes, I have a better idea. How about you don’t show up?”
“They’re still not getting it, though,” added Lawrence Jones. “It’s a different time now. Like the country is in a different position. What they did for Pence wouldn’t be acceptable in today’s time now. I agree. And they just don’t have the leverage. They don’t have it anymore. So I just think they need to wake up a little bit.”
One could point out that this is precisely the sort of cultural protest that makes a ton of sense and works perfectly within a free market model that so many on the right espouse. No one gets hurt, other than DC-based fans of the play, however.
