CBS News anchor Gayle King is reportedly expected to leave her CBS Mornings hosting slot next year following the expiration of her contract.
Variety‘s Matt Donnelly and Brian Steinberg spoke to four people with “knowledge of the situation” on Thursday who said King was expected to leave her position as morning anchor after more than 10 years in the role.
“There are signs CBS would like her to stay on board with the news division, potentially with a deal to produce her own programming for the network,” reported Donnelly and Steinberg, noting that “Norah O’Donnell, who previously anchored ‘CBS Evening News,’ stepped down from that role in January and transitioned to being a senior correspondent for CBS News, contributing to a range of programs and coverage.”
In a statement, CBS News signaled its interest in continuing to work with King after the expiration of her contract in May.
“There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026,” the network said. “She’s a truly valued part of CBS and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.”
CBS News has made several changes since the installation of controversial journalist Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief this month.
This week, it was reported that CBS News parent company Paramount Skydance would lay off around 1,000 employees as part of its restructuring following the Trump-approved merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media in August.
CBS Evening News co-anchor John Dickerson also announced his departure from the company this week, 16 years after sitting in the anchor chair for the first time.
Weiss, meanwhile, has reportedly been looking to hire several prominent conservatives from competing cable news networks, including Fox News anchor Bret Baier and CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings.
