Glenn Greenwald: Media Irresponsibly Scaring People over Patriot Act
The Patriot Act is set to expire tonight, and there are some worries on Capitol Hill that it may end up lapsing and the U.S. could be vulnerable to attacks. The White House has certainly been making this point clear with public comments by spokespeople, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and even President Obama himself.
Glenn Greenwald was on CNN earlier this afternoon discussing the issue with Brian Stelter, and said the media “should really be ashamed of themselves” for reporting on what the government says about the Patriot Act without actually doing the due diligence of questioning their argument.
Contrary to the lessons he thought the media learned from Iraq, the media continues to “propagandize the public,” Greenwald said, and pointed out that past claims of the U.S. being “less safe” as a result of reining in certain programs have been demonstrated to be completely false.
