GOP Congressman Says Trump Is ‘Risking Single-Handedly Losing the Congress For Republicans’
During an appearance on MSNBC today, Rep. David Jolly (R-FL) hit back at a false and misleading ad against him from Democrats who tried to associate him with the GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Jolly also noted how he feels Trump will lose Republicans their hold on Congress.
While speaking to host Thomas Roberts, Jolly talked about a campaign ad released by the DCCC which had false images of him and Trump standing together. As PolitiFact pointed out, the ad is Mostly False as Jolly and Trump don’t have exactly the same stances on abortion and they’ve never met. Even more, Jolly has explicitly said he doesn’t support Trump.
This led to a discussion about Jolly’s anti-Trump sentiment and whether that will hurt him in his Congressional race against former Florida Governor Charlie Crist. According to Jolly, Trump is “toxic” to down-ballot races, so he is willing to alienate some Trump supporters ahead of Election Day.
“I represent a district that President Obama won,” Jolly told Roberts. “And while I understand the convictions of millions of Trump supporters, the reality is for down-ballot Republicans in local races, he’s created headwinds among independents and Democrats.”
The Florida Republican continued, “Donald Trump is single-handedly losing the Congress for Republicans and it’s because of seats like the one I have the opportunity to serve in right now.”
