Late last week, it was reported that the Trump administration was reversing course and would not be pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement. However, the White House immediately denied that report, stating that President Trump had not changed his mind. Since then, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said that “under the right conditions” the US could stay in the agreement, amid reports that the president is unlikely to change his mind.
With Trump airing his dissatisfaction with the accord to French President Emmanuel Macron today at the United Nations General Assembly, CNN anchor Jake Tapper asked one of the administration’s harshest critics when it comes to climate policy his thoughts about Trump complaining about the deal.
“Look, China is doing more than the US right now,” California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) told Tapper regarding Trump’s complaints about China having it easier than America. “They’re closing down coal plants. They’re investing in solar and wind. They’re mastering battery technology which will help America.”
Brown continued, “So this point that America got a bad deal is fake. It’s more fake than any fake news assertion by President Trump.”
The California governor went on to call climate change an “existential threat” while stating that the Paris agreement is fundamental to fighting it.
